The enormous spread of this three quarters of a square shawl was intended to evoke the giant sea fan corals found languidly waving on coral reefs. I thought it fitting to look to the beauty of the sea for inspiration while dreaming up a pattern to highlight malabrigo’s take on the 2019 Pantone color of the year, Living Coral.

Did I mention the shawl’s size? A piece that one can truly snuggle up in. When worn in the traditional manner, the shape creates a straight line across the back and the wings wrap all the way around the front. Place the center panel on one shoulder and the wings will wrap around to form an almost cape-like garment. And there will be no worries about it slipping off!

This shawl is constructed like a top down triangle, only it has 3 panels. Just before the lace trim there is an increase row that shifts the shape into more of a crescent and provides the oversized coverage.

The pattern can be worked entirely from written instructions or with supplementary charts.
